Union minister to inaugurate event today
Human rights will be the central theme of the 35th conference of Markaz Ssaquafathi Ssunniyya (Sunni cultural centre) to be held at Markaz centre at Karanthur, near here, from Friday to Sunday, Sunni leader Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliar has said. Union Minister for Minority Affairs K.A. Rehman will open the event.
At a press conference on Wednesday, Mr. Musliar said Islamic scholars from across the globe, and top political leaders of the country would be in the city for the three-day conference.
One of its highlights would be a convocation ceremony at which 941 students who qualified from Markaz institutions would be awarded certificates. Some would be given certificates for learning the Koran by heart.
Mr. Musliar said the speakers would focus on the cultural, social, and political identity crisis in the country. Special emphasis was being laid on human rights since atrocities against women and children were on the rise across the globe, he said. A session has been earmarked to discuss employer-employee relations since these had come under great strain. Another highlight of the event would be the “Sheik Zayed International peace conference on Saturday. Mr. Musaliar would make “a declaration on protection of human rights” at the valedictory session of the conference on Sunday.
Though no session had been set aside to discuss women’s issues at the conference, special programmes were being held separately for women. Classes were being held on Saturdays at Markaz centre.
